Mackie Monday: Importance of EQ

Reading Time: 2 minutes

I had the opportunity this month to visit our sister company in the UK, City Electrical Factors, for their annual conference: CEF Live. The experience was enlightening and inspiring, but one presentation really resonated with me. CES CEO and President Thomas Hartland-Mackie Presenting at CEF Live

This Mackie Monday is my opportunity to give you a proverbial high five for being amazing – here’s why.

Words cannot adequately express how proud I am to work with such a fantastic group of people who are all truly an extension of my family! The growth we have achieved as a company is absolutely phenomenal and it boils down to one thing: YOU!

As discussed in my last blog post, we as a company are where we are based on unwavering loyalty to two founding principles:

  • Invest in people.
  • Provide outstanding customer service.

Hopefully, in the May release of Mackie Monday, you saw some of the new ways I am trying to engage with you. I do believe open communication is critical to the success of both of the above points.

At the UK conference, Charlie Beddows, CEF Managing Director, asked the attendees to raise their hand if they did not have a degree

Over 75 percent of the room raised their hand. He then went on to discuss the importance of EQ (emotional intelligence) over IQ (intellectual intelligence), stating that only 20 percent of decisions are made using IQ. The remaining 80 percent draw from other influencing conditions

I firmly agree that as a company we are proud to hire from within, and you make that so easy for us. We are a business rife with EQ, which is built upon five primary categories:

  • Self Awareness
  • Self Regulation
  • Motivation
  • Empathy
  • Social Skills

Learn more about EQ: What is EQ?

I think we found the key to success, and that key is EQ. Your emotional intelligence is what sets us apart as a company. As my grandfather always said:

“What happens at the branch level is what’s most important. At the end of the day, all of the success of the business occurs at branch level. Everything above that in the management structure is there to support them – it’s a necessary overhead really. We are a company that instills local autonomy to make local decisions catering to their local customers. That has been a successful business model for us, and there is nothing that can change that!”

This premise is only made possible with your EQ. Thank you again for everything you do. I am so proud to be part of this fantastic company, this family.

I look forward to seeing you on our next Mackie Monday!
