Mackie Monday | CES is Opportunity!

Reading Time: 2 minutes

This Mackie Monday, I would like to talk to you about the opportunity that exists at City Electric Supply. We take great pride in being a place that provides unlimited career progression.

Left to Right: Geoff Gordillo, CFO James Henderson, General Manager Jim Lawson, General Manager Russ Swanson, General Manager Neil Mallinson, General Manager John Gray, CEO Thomas Hartland-Mackie, IT Manager Rob Hodgson, General Manager Gary Smith, TES General Manager Andrew Dawes, Tamco General Manger Frank McShane, Marketing Manager Thomas McShaneWe don’t require a college degree or an MBA to progress up the management ladder like so many companies. Actually, not one member of the US Senior Management team has a college degree…including myself.

We certainly don’t look at degrees as a negative. Promotion, however, is based on performance, ability, and an alignment with the vision and direction of the company.

No matter what your first position with the company is, you have the potential to reach as far as your ability can take you. To prove this point, please see below the positions from which our six US General Managers started:

Gary Smith – Counter/Warehouse
John Gray – Driver
Jim Lawson – Sales Representative
Russ Swanson – Driver
Neil Mallinson -Trainee
Frank McShane – Technical Engineer

As you can see, each and every one worked their way up through the system based on their ability and performance.

During the last trading year, 302 people were promoted within our US business. This means more than 12 percent of our US workforce progressed their career through promotion in the last 12 months alone. On top of that, we added 213 employees in the US last year.

To better highlight these opportunities, we made two decisions at our recent senior management meeting. First, each edition of The Wire will showcase all promotions that have taken place over the past quarter and second, we will launch a system to better highlight available positions across the branch network. So, please, look for updates over the coming months.

What makes all of this possible? It’s simple…growth! Over the last two years, we grew revenues by more than 30 percent and opened an additional 36 branch locations throughout the US. This growth provides opportunity for career advancement at all levels within the company and we don’t plan on this growth slowing down anytime soon.

With nine new locations so far this year and a goal of 20 to 25 per year projected moving forward, there will be plenty of opportunity across the company over the next few years.
